Some time ago I met with a job coach for help writing my resume. I knew I had "done stuff" but I had no idea what to write. Her advise to me was to think about how what you do matters. It's not about the fact that you provided customer service, it's about how your service supported the copmany's interest.
ReplyDeleteExample:
Assisted customers with wine and liquor selection based on customer needs and knowledge of brands and vineyards
How about:
Shared brand and vineyard expertise to support the customer buying experience and bring additional value to their experience.
Increased store sales through one-to-one customer interactions, sharing
expert brand knowledge and food-pairing recommendation in to ensure customer was provided with exceptional service.
These are totally off the cuff, but see what a little spin can do?
Good thoughts by Ado.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your understanding that everything you’ve done could be important to your resume. It’s early in the career game for you, but there is no time like grad school to start thinking about how you want to craft this career and how your history so far already might point you in a direction.
This does a lot with an early resume.
If you get a chance, take a look at Yankee Chicken’s resume again. It is not her career resume. It is based solely on her interest in raising chickens. It is as thorough as her job resume and convincing in terms of her expertise.
It shows you how easily your interests can become your goals.
Take a look at how some of your other classmates rewrote their resume or designed new cover letters based around their class niche. Is there a way you can pull your “sense of adventure” concept through your resume? Could you include your skiing or your interest in the FDNY somehow?
How can you pull a narrative, yours, through all these disparate things you've accomplished? What would you select from each experience that reinforces where you want to go?
Then –getting back to what Ado was saying– how can you show potential bosses how that sense of adventure could work for them?
